AVC 2012: On The Waiting List

Crap! I'm on the "backorder list" for the 2012 Sparkfun AVC!

That means several people have to officially drop out or I won't get to compete at all this year! I didn't see the announcement until a day after and apparently, by that time, all 50 slots had already been filled. I am in the top five on the waiting list, though, so there is still a glimmer of hope.

I don't know if I will get to compete but what is certain is that Data Bus development will continue and you'll read about it here.

Equally certain is that I will be hoping and praying that at least 5 other contestants fail miserably and give up... (is that wrong of me?)

  1. Bummer! I hope you get a slot. I noticed the announcement by sheer luck when there were just 9 slots left. They were sold out the following day.

  2. Glad to hear that, Scott! Best of luck in June! The slots went amazingly fast. Surely out of 50 people a few will throw in the towel...

  3. Yeah, the slots went way too fast. Probably faster than they expected. They probably should have done a pre-sale announcement, but hindsight is 20/20.

I'm pretty sure you'll get a slot; I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've been thinking of suggesting on the the Sparkfun forum that the locals get together for some robot/AVC meetups. What do you think?

  4. Local AVC meetups would be a blast! If there's enough interest, maybe I could ask Steve G if Club Workshop would be willing to host it... Or perhaps it'd be more productive to meet in a giant parking lot.... :)

  5. Local meetup? Count me in! Maybe we could find a parking lot with a building in it; hmm or just meet at Sparkfun.

By the way, I'm number 4 on the waiting list, grumble, grumble.

  6. Yow! You didn't get an entry? The good news is that there will surely be some entries that can't make the June 1 deadline of sending in the qualification video. Be ready with that, and you can take their place.

The entries sold out within 24 hours. I got lucky... I was in Virginia on business (I was in the process of selling my house there.) and I happened to log in on my laptop and see the announcement.

I am totally looking forward to the competition this year. I've been on the lookout for parking lots in my area, but they're pretty weak. Unfortunately, I'm like... 900 miles from the Sparkfun area, which limits my ability to do testing there.

Scott: I read your blog. Went to school on it. My robot is being documented on my blog "www.roboticcore.com". I look forward to meeting you in June.

  7. @TeslaFan: I think I'm close enough to the top to get in ... I got lucky with Free Day, maybe I will get lucky again. We'll see. Not having a good parking lot makes things quite tough. I'm fortunate to have a few areas nearby. I use an elementary school basketball / tetherball area as the primary test site for now.
